BUTTERWORTH (Sin Chew Daily) -- Bukit Katak at Kampung Gua Petai outside Butterworth, Penang, is a little known paradise that rivals China's world famous Jiuzhaigou.

The pristine blue lakes of varying sizes there were said to be formed by rainwater filling up dozens of holes left behind by earlier quarrying activities.

These man-made lakes are surrounded by red color rocks, making the area a scenic spot that has gained popularity in more recent years thanks to publicity on social media sites.

To reach Bukit Katak, drive from Sungai Dua in Seberang Perai Utara following the direction of Air Hitam Dalam Educational Forest, and then look out for the sign of Kampung Gua Petai on your left after the forest.

Only 5km from Bukit Katak, the 11-hectare Air Hitam Dalam Educational Forest is a rarely known birdwatching haven visited by 150 migratory bird species and many other animals.

The forest boasts a 1,162 meter footpath, a 300 meter suspension bridge and eight kiosks where visitors can take a rest.
